The Botanical Building & Lily Pond Free

Why it made the list: One of the largest lath structures in the world, a beautiful wooden dome full of ferns, orchids and palms, mirrored in a long reflecting pond out front. It's the most photographed spot in the park, it's free, and it takes twenty lovely minutes.
The Japanese Friendship Garden

Why it made the list: A twelve-acre Japanese garden with koi ponds, a bonsai collection, cherry trees and a tea pavilion, a genuinely calm counterpoint to the busy museum promenade. In spring the cherry blossoms bring the whole city up.
Spanish Village Art Center Free

Why it made the list: A courtyard of working artists' studios set around a famously colorful painted-tile plaza. It's free to wander, the tilework is one of the most cheerful photos in the city, and you can watch painters, glassblowers and jewelers actually at work.
The Spreckels Organ Pavilion Free concerts

Why it made the list: One of the largest outdoor pipe organs in the world, in a grand curved pavilion, and the Sunday afternoon civic organ concerts are free, weekly, and a genuine only-in-San-Diego experience. In summer there's a free evening concert series too.
⭐ Bonus Pick: The Free Tram & Ranger Walks
The park runs a free tram between the main lots and the museum core, use it to skip the hilly walk from parking. And the free ranger-led and volunteer walking tours (offered several mornings a week) are the best way to understand the 1915 architecture you're standing in. Both cost nothing and most visitors never notice them.
