5 Best Beaches near San Francisco

San Francisco's beaches aren't for swimming, the water is cold and the currents are serious, but they're some of the most beautiful coastline in California, and two of them frame the Golden Gate Bridge. Here are five worth the trip, from a city beach with the bridge behind it to a redwood-backed cove down the coast. Bring a jacket to all of them.

1

Baker Beach The bridge view

Presidio · Free

Why it made the list: The postcard: a sweep of sand at the foot of the Presidio with the Golden Gate Bridge rising directly behind it. It's the beach you picture when you picture San Francisco, and the view back at the bridge and the headland is unbeatable, no swimming, all scenery.

Best for: Late afternoon into sunset, for the light on the bridge
The vibe: Dramatic, windy, the classic bridge shot
How to get there: Walk to the north end for the clearest bridge view. Note the far north stretch is clothing-optional.
Insider tip: The currents here are dangerous, this is a look-and-walk beach, not a swimming one. Come for sunset, bring a windbreaker, and stay out of the water.
2

Ocean Beach The big one

Why it made the list: Three miles of wild Pacific coastline along the city's foggy western edge, the biggest, moodiest beach in San Francisco, backed by the Sunset and Richmond neighbourhoods. It's for long windswept walks and bonfires, not sunbathing, and it's atmospheric even (especially) in the fog.

Best for: A long walk any time; bonfires at dusk in summer
The vibe: Vast, wild, often foggy, surfers in the water
How to get there: Walk the length of it, and check the rules for the designated bonfire pits if you want a fire at dusk.
Insider tip: It's the foggiest, coldest beach here, dress for it. It's also the surfers' beach, and the water is for experts only; the rip currents are no joke.
3

Crissy Field / East Beach Easiest

Marina / Presidio · Free

Why it made the list: The most convenient stretch of shore in the city, a restored tidal marsh and beach along the Marina with the bridge on one side and the downtown skyline on the other. Flat, walkable, and the best place to picnic with a bridge view without leaving town.

Best for: A clear afternoon, walking toward the bridge
The vibe: Joggers, dogs, kite-surfers, picnics
How to get there: Walk or cycle the flat path from the Marina toward Fort Point under the bridge, the view builds the whole way.
Insider tip: It's the easiest to reach and the most sheltered, which makes it the reliable choice when the ocean-facing beaches are buried in fog. Great for a bridge picnic.
4

Stinson Beach The day trip

Marin County · Free

Why it made the list: Over the bridge and through the hills of Marin, a genuinely wide, sandy, swimmable-on-a-warm-day beach backed by Mount Tamalpais, and the closest thing to a real beach day near the city. The drive over Highway 1 is half the trip.

Best for: A warm, clear summer day
The vibe: A proper beach town, redwoods behind you
How to get there: The drive over Highway 1 via Muir Woods; pack a lunch, there's not much in town.
Insider tip: It's about an hour by car (there's a seasonal weekend bus, but a car is easier), and it warms up more than the city beaches, check the fog, and pair it with Muir Woods on the way.
5

Half Moon Bay South coast

San Mateo Coast · Free

Why it made the list: Forty-five minutes south down the coast, a string of state beaches, bluff trails and a walkable small town, quieter and often sunnier than the city beaches. It's the relaxed option: a coastal drive, a long beach walk, and a proper lunch in town with no agenda.

Best for: A coastal-drive day, October for pumpkins
The vibe: Bluffs, tide pools, small-town calm
How to get there: Take Highway 1 south; walk the Coastside Trail along the bluffs, then lunch on Main Street.
Insider tip: Time the drive home for sunset, Highway 1 faces west the whole way. October is pumpkin season and the town gets mobbed; any other month it's quiet.

⭐ Bonus Pick: China Beach

The locals' secret: a small, sheltered cove tucked below the Sea Cliff neighbourhood, calmer and warmer than the exposed beaches and one of the few near the city where the water is actually protected enough to wade. Hard to find, rarely crowded, with the bridge peeking around the headland, the reward for knowing it's there.
