5 Best Views San Francisco

San Francisco is built on more than forty hills, which means the views are the main event. These are the five worth the climb, from the one everybody does to the one locals keep to themselves, with the right time of day for each.

1

Twin Peaks The big one

Why it made the list: The classic: two hills right in the middle of the city, high enough to see the entire grid laid out below with both bridges at either end. It's the view every establishing shot of San Francisco uses, and at night it's genuinely spectacular.

Best for: After dark, or first thing before the fog
The vibe: Windswept, freezing, worth it
When to go: Go at night for the lit grid. It is far colder and windier up there than in the city, bring a real coat.
Insider tip: Don't leave anything visible in a parked car here. Break-ins at viewpoints are a well-documented problem in San Francisco.
2

Coit Tower & Telegraph Hill

North Beach · $

Why it made the list: The hill gives you the bay, Alcatraz and the Bay Bridge; the tower gives you a 360 if you pay to go up. The Depression-era murals inside the base are free and genuinely worth seeing on their own, most visitors walk straight past them.

Best for: Late morning, when the bay is clear
The vibe: Steep approach, 1930s murals, boats below
When to go: See the murals at the base first, they're free, then decide whether you want the lift up.
Insider tip: Walk up via the Filbert Steps rather than driving: a wooden staircase through gardens and cottages, and the best approach to any view in the city.
3

Lands End Most dramatic

Why it made the list: A cliff path where the Golden Gate Bridge appears and disappears through cypress trees above a wild stretch of coast. It's the most cinematic view in the city and the least like a viewpoint, you have to walk for it, which is why it's never crowded in the same way.

Best for: Late afternoon, walking east to west
The vibe: Ocean noise, wind, no city at all
When to go: Start at the Sutro Baths ruins and walk the coastal trail toward the bridge.
Insider tip: This is the foggiest corner of the city. Check whether the bridge is visible before you make the trip out, on a grey day you'll walk the whole trail and see nothing.
4

Bernal Heights Local's pick

Why it made the list: The view locals actually use. A grassy hilltop park with a 360-degree panorama that holds its own against Twin Peaks, minus the car park, the coaches and the wind. It's an easy walk up from a genuinely lovely neighbourhood.

Best for: Sunset, any day the fog is east of the hills
The vibe: Dogs, joggers, couples, no tour buses
When to go: Walk up from Cortland Avenue and stay for the sunset over the western hills.
Insider tip: Combine it with dinner on Cortland Avenue below, it's one of the best small restaurant streets in the city and almost entirely local.
5

Battery Spencer Best of the bridge

Marin Headlands · Free
Battery Spencer Photo: Vi Lai Vue

Why it made the list: Across the bridge on the Marin side, looking back, the bridge towers below you with the whole city behind them. This is the photograph, and no view from the San Francisco side comes close to it.

Best for: Sunrise, or an hour before sunset
The vibe: Cold, exposed, jaw-dropping
When to go: Time it for the fog rolling under the span, it's the shot everyone wants and it happens most afternoons in summer.
Insider tip: Parking is very limited and the lane in is narrow. Go early, and pair it with Muir Woods or Sausalito to make the crossing worthwhile.

⭐ Bonus Pick: The Sausalito Ferry

The moving view. A transit ticket buys a boat across the bay past Alcatraz with the skyline behind you and the bridge off to one side, the best value viewpoint in the city, and the only one with a seat and a bar.
