5 Neighborhoods Chicago

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, 77 official ones, and the best days here are spent picking one and walking it, not ticking off downtown sights. These are the five worth a whole afternoon, from vintage-and-cocktails Wicker Park to the murals of Pilsen, with where to start each.

1

Wicker Park & Bucktown Best all-rounder

Near Northwest · $$

Why it made the list: The city's coolest walkable stretch, vintage shops, indie boutiques, record stores, great coffee and some of Chicago's best restaurants and bars, all radiating from the six-corner intersection of Milwaukee, North and Damen. It's the easy first neighborhood to fall for.

Best for: A weekend afternoon that turns into dinner
The vibe: Vintage, cocktails, murals, young and lively
Where to start: Start at the Milwaukee/North/Damen crossroads and wander the Milwaukee Avenue vintage shops, then eat.
Insider tip: It's one Blue Line stop (Damen) from downtown, so it's the easiest neighborhood to reach car-free. The 606 elevated trail runs right through it if you want a walk between stops.
2

Logan Square Food & drink

Northwest · $$
Logan Square Photo: David Herszenson

Why it made the list: A little further out and more local, a leafy square, boulevards of greystones, and one of the best restaurant-and-bar scenes in the city without the crowds. It's where Chicagoans go to eat and drink well, from the famous Lula Cafe to a deep bench of cocktail bars.

Best for: An evening built around dinner and drinks
The vibe: Leafy, local, seriously good food
Where to start: The Logan Square monument and the boulevards, then dinner, Lula Cafe is the neighborhood institution.
Insider tip: The Sunday farmers market on the boulevard is one of the best in the city in season. It's on the Blue Line (Logan Square stop), a few minutes past Wicker Park.
3

Pilsen The murals

Lower West Side · $
Pilsen Photo: Mark Musgrave

Why it made the list: The heart of Mexican Chicago and the city's most vivid neighborhood for street art, block after block of murals along 16th Street and 18th Street, superb taquerias and bakeries, galleries, and the excellent (and free) National Museum of Mexican Art.

Best for: A daytime wander, ending with tacos
The vibe: Murals, panaderías, art, real neighborhood energy
Where to start: Walk 18th Street for the shops and food, the 16th Street rail corridor for the biggest murals, then the National Museum of Mexican Art.
Insider tip: The National Museum of Mexican Art is free and one of the best in the country for the subject. Pilsen is on the Pink Line (18th St stop), an easy ride from the Loop.
4

Lincoln Park Classic Chicago

North Side · $$$
Lincoln Park Photo: Andrew Phelps

Why it made the list: The polished, leafy North Side classic, handsome brownstones, the lakefront, and a genuinely free world-class zoo, plus the shops and restaurants of Armitage and Halsted. It's the pretty, walkable, easygoing Chicago that people picture when they picture living here.

Best for: A sunny afternoon with a lakefront walk
The vibe: Leafy, upscale, lake and park on the doorstep
Where to start: The free Lincoln Park Zoo and conservatory, then shopping and lunch on Armitage Avenue.
Insider tip: The Lincoln Park Zoo and the Lincoln Park Conservatory are both free, a lovely, no-cost afternoon. Walk it with the lakefront path for the skyline view south.
5

Andersonville Local favorite

Far North Side · $$
Andersonville Photo: G.C. Hung

Why it made the list: The quietest gem on the list, a historically Swedish, now proudly independent and LGBTQ-friendly neighborhood built around a single walkable stretch of Clark Street, lined with independent bookshops, boutiques, bakeries and restaurants. No chains, no crowds, just a lovely afternoon.

Best for: A relaxed browse-and-eat afternoon
The vibe: Independent, welcoming, small-town-in-the-city
Where to start: Walk Clark Street from Foster north, bookshops, boutiques and Swedish bakeries the whole way.
Insider tip: It's the antidote to the busy neighborhoods, no crowds, all independent. Grab a cinnamon roll at the historic Swedish bakery Ann Sather and browse the bookstores.

⭐ Bonus Pick: Hyde Park

For a different side of the city, head to the South Side's Hyde Park, the University of Chicago's Gothic campus, the excellent (free) Robie House neighborhood of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, the Obama connection, and the Museum of Science and Industry nearby. It's a longer trip but a rewarding, un-touristy half-day.
