5 Free Things Los Angeles

Some of the very best of LA costs nothing at all: the view from the Observatory, a world-class museum on a hilltop, the endless free show of the boardwalk. These are the five free things worth building a day around, with how to do each one right.

1

Griffith Observatory The view

Why it made the list: The gleaming Art Deco observatory on the flank of Mount Hollywood, with free admission, telescopes, exhibits and the single best view in the city, downtown, the basin, the ocean and the Hollywood sign all at once. It's the definitive LA panorama.

Best for: Late afternoon into sunset and city lights
The vibe: Iconic, sweeping, free
Don't miss: The lawn and terraces for the sunset and Hollywood-sign view, then the free exhibits inside.
Insider tip: Admission and the grounds are free; parking is limited, so come early or take the DASH shuttle up. Sunset into dusk is magic, when the city lights come on.

The Getty Center Free art

Why it made the list: A hilltop museum of European masterpieces, striking travertine architecture and gorgeous gardens, all free to enter and reached by a little tram. Between the art, the design and the view to the sea, it's the best free half-day in LA.

Best for: A clear afternoon
The vibe: Grand, serene, cultured
Don't miss: The Central Garden, the galleries, and the terrace view at golden hour.
Insider tip: Entry is free; you only pay to park, so carpool or rideshare to keep it truly cheap. Go on a clear day for the ocean view.
3

The Venice Boardwalk The free show

Why it made the list: A mile-plus of nonstop spectacle along the sand: street performers, artists, the outdoor Muscle Beach gym, the skate park and the graffiti walls. Simply walking it is one of the great free experiences in the city.

Best for: A sunny weekend afternoon
The vibe: Bohemian, buzzy, free
Don't miss: Walk the boardwalk end to end, watch the skate park, then find the quiet canals inland.
Insider tip: The Venice Canals a few blocks in are a peaceful, free counterpoint. It's a lively scene, so keep an eye on your things.
4

The Hollywood Walk of Fame The classic

Why it made the list: The stretch of Hollywood Boulevard studded with more than 2,700 brass-and-terrazzo stars, anchored by the TCL Chinese Theatre and its courtyard of celebrity handprints. It's tourist LA in its purest form, and it costs nothing to walk.

Best for: Morning, before the crowds build
The vibe: Kitschy, famous, free
Don't miss: Find a few favorite stars, then the handprints in the Chinese Theatre forecourt.
Insider tip: It's gloriously touristy and can be gritty, so go by day and keep your wits about you. The Chinese Theatre courtyard is free to wander.
5

A Runyon Canyon Hike The local move

Why it made the list: The quintessential LA hike: a short, steep, celebrity-spotting climb straight up from the edge of Hollywood to a ridgeline with a knockout view over the city and the sign. It's free, central and about as LA as exercise gets.

Best for: Early morning or golden hour
The vibe: Sporty, social, view-topped
Don't miss: The loop up to the ridge for the city-and-sign view, then back down.
Insider tip: It's exposed with little shade, so bring water and go early or late. Street parking is tight; the Fuller Avenue entrance is the usual way in.

⭐ Bonus Pick: Grand Central Market & the Sign

Two more that cost nothing to enjoy: Grand Central Market downtown is free to wander and graze (bring a few dollars for a taco), and the classic Hollywood Sign view from Lake Hollywood Park or the end of Beachwood Drive is a free, only-in-LA photo stop.
