The Volunteer Park Conservatory Hidden beauty

Why it made the list: A gorgeous 1912 Victorian glasshouse in Capitol Hill's Volunteer Park, packed with palms, orchids and cacti under gleaming white ironwork. It's a warm, jewel-box escape, especially on a grey Seattle day, and the park around it has a great water-tower view.

Why it made the list: Seattle's grittiest, most creative corner, a former brewery district south of downtown full of vintage shops, artist studios, dive bars and industrial-cool charm. Almost no visitors make it here, which is exactly the appeal.
